Haven't seen this one for while. |
For this Top 5 list there are some rules. First off, this list won't just be filled of "tap-to-earn" gimmicks like in Mario Kart 8 or Hyrule Warriors. Plus, I'm not even considering games like amiibo Tap and Mini Mario amiibo Challenge because those games are free and if you don't want them, DON'T BUY THEM.
So with that out of the way. These are the Top 5 Worst uses of amiibo.
5) Mario Party 10 (amiibo Party Mode) - I honestly was debating this entry. I honestly liked the game and thought the use of amiibo here was actually a really good idea. The mode itself has the players use amiibo to play Mario Party in the classic board game style from the original games. The board itself made of sections themed to different characters. The mode is fun to play as it gives the classic Mario Party style of gameplay. However, in order to play the mode takes one amiibo per player, the gameplay aside from the minigames is bare bones classic Mario Party, and the use of the amiibo is used to do everything, even stuff that you just need a button for including ROLLING THE DICE. It's just a bit too complicated and lackluster. However it is still charming so it isn't that bad. Number 4...
4) Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival - Mario Party at least had minigames mixed in with its gameplay. In this game they replace that with... happy points? This game is already pretty bare-bones, but unlike Mario Party 10 the ENTIRE GAME requires amiibo. From the main board game mode to the trivia section where tapping amiibo can be replaced with a button press (seriously again?), it just doesn't work that well here. Some good points on this game is that the island survival game is actually clever and fun looking, Nintendo ported that minigame to the 3DS game for better or worse. However, while that one section has its merits, the game as a whole, along with the amiibo function, is just really meh... Although I do want some of those amiibo.
3) Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Toad and Seek) - This game is fun and enjoyable, if you have a chance to pick it up you should. The amiibo functionality kinda sucks though. It's so simple and unfulfilling to me. Tap the Toad amiibo from Mario Party and you unlock the ability to look for 8-bit Toad in a level, That's it. Maybe it has some fun in it as you are more inclined to replay some fun levels, but it's so minimal that it really comes off as a last minute decision. Why not special costumes based on the amiibo you touch, serious missed opportunity. Fortunately, this is just a blemish on an otherwise really good game.
2) Chibi Robo Zip Lash - This amiibo functionality confuses me. Why am I leveling up a Chibi Robo amiibo, adorable as it is. It almost seems really tacked on. It seems like a stripped down version of the Smash Bros. amiibo functionality. The game isn't that fun already, and the amiibo kinda just adds very little, just the same game this time with a "more powerful" Chibi Robo. The other 3 games before this added something interesting in their games. Mario Party gave a familiar yet new game mode. Amiibo Festival gave us different types of games. Even Captain Toad gave a passable time waster, that has some enjoyment. Here, I don't really get that. Not to mention the amiibo itself is very limited. Other than Mario Maker and Yoshi's Woolly World, there isn't that much to do with the Chibi Robo amiibo. I do hope Nintendo tries to make more Chibi Robo games, because the amiibo right now is wasted here.
1) Xenoblade Chronicles 3D - I know I said I wouldn't put too many games where you just tap the amiibo and get items, but this game, amazing as it is, I have to give attention to. Unlike any of the other games where amiibo are just tapped to get items, this game has you tap one and ONLY one amiibo to get unlockables, and once you unlock them, THAT'S IT! It has nothing that helps enhance the game in any way. Its just used as a way to get music tracks and in-game figures. Again, You have to have the Shulk amiibo in order to do this or you get squat and good luck trying to find it, and no other amiibo work with this game at all. Why not give items to upgrade things, give health, or random collectibles? At least Treasure Tracker did that, and the amiibo functionality had a game around it. Even Chibi Robo, as bland as the level-up system was, had that and unlockables from touching different amiibo. This doesn't even give that. Again, a blemish on an otherwise great game but the "amiibo function" is so unnecessary and so unfulfilling that you only notice it has its functionality because of the amiibo logo on the box. If you find enjoyment from the unlockables themselves, great. However, if you want the Shulk amiibo, just get it for Smash Bros. not this game.
So those are some "rules" on how to not use amiibo, but what do you think? What game do you think should be a rule on how not to use amiibo? Let me know in the comments below. Thanks for the views and I'll catch you later.
We definitely need to take a look at the positives of amiibo, especially because they outweigh the negatives. Next Time... Top 5 BEST Uses of amiibo. But before that...
